I loved the premise of this story. I went in not knowing anything about the plot and was really surprised how much this story fit my interests. The writing at some points were not my favorite style wise. Some points were overly poetic. I love the use of high school english teaching being a theme in this book because the metaphors and foreshadowing were so obvious throughout I felt like I was in class again. I don’t mean this in a bad way. I could just really relate.

On more than one occasion, I yelled out loud because Todd's descent into madness is unpredictable but compelling.

Incredibly dark and incredibly sad. The writing was beautiful and I felt invested in the main character and his son from page 1. There is clear warning that this is a dark book, and the first half was so intense and so stressful, and I was completely fooled - the dark place it went was not the dark place I was expecting.  When it turned dark I was so uncomfortable and disturbed and upset that I almost stopped reading. I was even a little mad, like why did the author do this? I finished almost out of spite - I had to figure out where we were being led, I had to understand what it was all for.

The skill of the writer really made this one work (if it could be said to work); such stunning and well placed language. But oh my, how sad a tale for the sensitive main character and his sweet son. I'm glad I read it, but I don't think I would ever recommend it to anyone.

What a BLEAK novel but my god… from the first sentence this book had its talons in me and I could not stop. It was one of those books that when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about reading it. Cannot recommend enough.

I see potential in this author. However, there was not a single character that was likable.

Todd was bullied in school and as often happens became a bully. There is child abuse, domestic violence, a lot of homophobia, and it just became exhausting. There is some gore. Unnecessarily so, but nothing I couldn’t handle. And Todd’s unraveling reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tale Tale Heart, but not as engaging.
