Way back when I was around 12, Cats the musical come out on video (yes video, not DVD, I'm that old)! My siblings and I had received it as a joint Christmas present. Now being 12, I was a bit presumptuous about whether I was going to like it or not. It was a musical about cats that had been running forever, how interesting could it be?! Then one summer holiday I actually sat down and watched it. There started my obsession with the mysterious, secret lives of cats!

Franny and Toby is a lovely little story exploring just that. Who knows what cats get up to when they disappear for hours each day, only gracing us with their presence to eat and sleep? In Franny and Toby's case, they're the new cats on the block, and they have to make the first tentative steps towards ingratiating themselves to the existing residents. The rules in this neighbourhood are slightly different. There is a treaty between the cats and the birds, the "sky swimmers" meaning there can be no hunting for Toby Tall Boy and there is also an unusual friendship with a softly spoken free-range rabbit, as well as a road runner, who, like Franny, has the rare ability to read.

Take a dash of Roald Dahl, a dollop of Watership Down and a large side order of Gabriel King and you get a charming little tale for all cat lovers which was a welcome break for me personally, having had some pretty hard hitting reads recently, this was the perfect mini break. 4 stars.
