I can't remember how this book got on to my to read list - a classic in the vein of little women , my side of the mountain, or little house on the prairie. As a child I would have devoured this booked and loved it, the independence of 4 children escaping death and managing to learn how to eek out an existence off the land. As an adult I wondered if the writer had ever done any of these tasks or merely watched others. For inexperienced and young children they managed a very successful farm with no crop or other failures. I was interested in the history that was presented (although obviously written by a royalist)- I had forgotten that piece of British history and felt I need to read up more on it. Overall an easy read.

This has the kids book issue of being vaguely patronising due to overexplaining things, and didn't have an especially exciting plot.
