Ah, Szayel Aporro Grantz. The Mayuri of Hueco Mundo. Naturally, the two of them were destined to rumble to the death in the sands of the world of Espada. It’s a shame that his time in this volume is so devastatingly short. Meanwhile, poor Renji and Ishida are forced to only watch, too creeped out by Mayuri to lend a hand. While they duke it out scientist to scientist, Kenpachi and Nnoitora are also battling it out while Yachiru, Orihime, and Ichigo stand on the sidelines. Like the other dueling pair, Nnoitora and Kenpachi seem well-matched - so much that Kenpachi is forced to shed his eye patch, thus releasing the seal on his energy and making him much stronger than before.

I love how this volume opens with the continued slow and agonizing death of Szayelaporro, with Mayuri explaining how he feels about “perfection” as a concept and how he feels that it’s abhorrent for a scientist to strive for perfection. I’m very confused how Mayuri healed Nemu in the off-screen panel, and it made me uncomfortable with implications especially since she’s technically his daughter, though I guess it would fit his character if he did something weird considering how he already treats her like less than human. I loved the fight between Nnoitra and Kenpachi, and I liked seeing the reveal of Nnoitra’s Hollow hole. Nnoitra was an interesting character in that he most likely hated women because he secretly had feelings for Nel, and he only desired power so he could die a powerful death. He technically got what he wanted. I’m not a huge fan of his character but I’m glad his character was short lived rather than drawn out. I loved the transition into the Fake Karakura Town arc, and I loved Aizen’s explanation of his grand plan thus far which started with kidnapping and framing Orihime so he could bait the Soul Society and get the Captains where he wanted them. I loved Ulquiorra’s escape and the cliffhanger ending of this volume.
