This was every bit as great as I had hoped! It's amazing as a standalone book, but I'm really hoping it's a series. (Duology would be fine!)

This is such a cute book.

The characters are consistent, each has their own unique voice with believable dialogue and interesting relationship dynamics. I find it difficult to find authors that can write children properly, with the added dynamic of adults not listening to them, but Fawcett does so effortlessly. I especially liked seeing how Ember's thought process worked, whether it was her interpretation of a figure of speech or the way she made connections with the world around her.

The plot was compelling, with very few plot holes that really had no significant impact on the story.
SpoilerFor example, at the very end when Ember is escaping Prince Cronus' ship she leaves Montgomery behind. When she wakes up back in the Firefly, her father says that he found Montgomery in her pocket. Maybe I missed something, but I don't remember her having time to unscrew the doorknob from the door. Or maybe it's magic. ;)
It's very imaginative and I know I would have adored it if I had read it when I was younger.

3.5/5 rounded up for how delightful this book is to read. I recommend for anyone who wants a well-written children's book that sparks nostalgia, is written to spread a message of kindness and acceptance, and, of course, contains dragons.
