Nice insights into Deaf culture.

This was very cute and wholesome stort but I also feel like I got to learn new things about the deaf community. Lynne Kelly does a great job looking at the differences linguistically between ASL and spoken English. Specifically I had never considered deaf poetry and how different idioms would come accross in sign language.

I read this as it was nominated for battle of the books.

What I liked (besides the gorgeous cover):
- deaf MC, introduces younger readers to deaf culture / communities.
- female MC is a tinkerer - loves fixing radios
- whales!

What I didn't like spoils the plot, so I won't give it away. Overall, I enjoyed this one.

This was cute and I'm interested to see what Deaf reviewers have to say about the representation. I'll admit to being a bit of a Grinch though, I would've liked it more if the whale parts were more realistic...

Kelly's focus on the isolation Iris felt really worked. I wish the surreal elements had been left out of the book. Either lean in to the surreal all the way, or leave them out completely. Throwing them in here and there takes away from the power of the story.
