Marc Spector is settling into his new digs in LA, working on a TV show that’s basically his life and how he got his powers, and enjoying the buckets of money he's making off of it. But he didn't move to LA "alone". But, instead of his usual other personas like Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, Marc is accompanied by other Avengers - Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. He incorporates a few of their signature elements into his usual arsenal of weaponry, with the help of his new associate, a former SHIELD agent. Marc becomes aware of a criminal mastermind trying to set himself up as a kingpin in LA, so he begins investigating and subverting plans. Moon Knight crosses paths with another ex-Avenger, Echo, and the two of them form a shaky alliance to bring down a budding criminal network.

This is okay, but it feels like generic Bendis kinda phoning it in. I’m not sure if this is the same Moon Knight as earlier incarnations, because with multiple personalities who can tell? It’s a complete story, which is a nice change.

For an ordinary guy without superpowers, though, his abilities are all over the place. The big bad here is Count Nefaria, who took on the entire Avengers back in the day, so I’m not sure how Moony is able to go toe-to-toe with him. It’s basically a street-level Scrapper taking on a Tank-Mage, which is hard to buy into. (For those unfamiliar with those terms, think Jackie Chan fighting Superman. Jackie isn’t going to win that, no matter how good he is.) So that’s an issue, but otherwise it’s fine, I guess.

I liked this moment, though:

I think I'm starting to love Moon Knight, you guys. Granted, I've only read a handful of his comics so far, but I've really enjoyed every single one. I came into Bendis' run with a little more apprehension because it's always a toss-up on whether his stuff will land for me. But this one landed for me in a big way.

It's got the slightly darker, edgier vibes that Moon Knight thrives off of but pairs them with a clever conceit (what if the voices Moon Knight hears in his head are the Avengers?) that adds a nice layer of comic book "fun" to the proceedings that worked far better than I expected. I also liked seeing Echo play a prominent supporting role but will confess that I find some of Bendis' handling of her to be a little...odd. He falls into some unfortunate tropes that didn't sit well with me, which is a bummer because I liked almost everything else he did here.

Maleev's artwork is a stellar addition to Bendis' scripts, too. His grungy aesthetics are a perfect fit for Moon Knight, and I loved the street-level vibes he brought to the story. However, some of his action scenes are difficult to follow, which threatens to derail some pivotal moments near the end. Still, I'll always prefer an artist who brings a strong sense of atmosphere and tone to a comic over almost anything else, so a handful of unremarkable fight scenes aren't a critical flaw for me.

I had a great time with the 12 issues here—they tell a satisfying, complete story that doesn't overstay its welcome and left me wanting more—big fan.

For a novice Moon Knight fan, this collection of Bendis and Maleev’s run can be quite confusing. Even knowing his power set, it took a lot of flipping back and forth to figure out when certain characters stopped being real. Despite that, this is a fun full story, where Marc Spector gets wrapped up in the rise of a new West Coast Kingpin when he gets his hands in an Ultron skull. Fights and Avengers cameos abound.

I liked all the characters and the story once I got a handle on what was happening. The art is very sketchy with extra lines and extra edges. It’s not my favorite form of art and I don’t think it helps make fight sequences all that clear, but it’s not horrible. It’s a very dark book though that makes sense being about a character associated with the moon. Just not a good intro to the character.
