In the beginning, I thought this book was going to be much darker than the pretty cover would have you believe. However, as I read on the author seemed reluctant to truly dig deep into the (many) issues and themes. There was colonialism and its long legacy, poverty and the new degradation faced by many once thriving communities, grief, physical and mental health, the military and the shadows of war, domestic violence, immigration, racism, aged care (well, the lack of it), pregnancy and motherhood... it goes on. It was too much for the book to bear and in striving for so much it lacked space for development and resolution.

Evocative and admirably written, it just needed less to truly succeed.

a story which sucked me into it. lots of beautiful flowery language which I always skim but a really interesting story exploring belonging, motherhood, race, class set in the UK and India. Characters with their troubles at their forefront but gripping and fascinating. Read this in a couple days, made me very interested to read more on similar topics.

This felt like a dark book with issues around loss, abuse, power, belonging and of course dignity. The dignity to make choices and be seen. However the characters and interlinking stories between the past in colonial India and that of modern day UK was gripping despite the dark themes.
