Listen, it was a me problem. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with this book : I just don't like Peter Pan stories. And that's fine, I'm just dumb for not checking the content of a book before buying it (and I did because 1) love Aiden Thomas, 2) pretty cover).
That is to say, I liked Wendy as a main character, the family dynamic is believable and the relationship between Wendy and Peter was very endearing. I enjoyed the writing a lot too, it's fluid and easy but some sentences really stand out - exactly what I appreciate. I liked the discussions about free will and the actual role of Peter Pan in the original text being discussed. I did shed a tear at the end because the way Thomas portrays grief is so well executed that it spoke to me a lot. This book reminded me how to move on when I'm stuck.
Now, for a book titled after the woods, there isn't a whole lot of woods in it. And the antagonist felt flat and two-dimensional (no pun intended, those who've read the book will understand). I expected to be more creeped out, more spooked and it didn't happen. Which is fine. But I'm disappointed.

Unfortunately I didn’t like this at all… I didn’t realize it was a Peter Pan retelling and I really struggled with how literal it was because I definitely prefer a loose retelling of fairy tales and stuff. I love Aiden’s writing and their other books, but this was just a miss for me and I didn’t connect to it. Just found it kind of cheesy at times and noticed a few errors and plot holes that I couldn’t get past.

I absolutely love this book. I am a huge Peter Pan enthusiast (it has been my special interest since i can think) and I love the way the story of Peter Pan is incorporated in this book.

One of the best Peter Pan retellings I’ve seen in a while. Plus!! The main character is super relatable (very realistic reactions to the crap going down around her)
and she’s a woman going into STEM :D
