I loved reading the Jurassic Park novel, and I hate The Lost World film, so I was really excited to read this novel. Unfortunately, the set-up is far better than the payoff. Once they get to the island, things get rather repetitive and “mystery” of this novel is not nearly as intriguing nor does the answer to it feel satisfying. Plus, there’s some strange retcons (and I’m not talking about Malcolm’s “resurrection,” which I’m perfectly fine with personally) that make this novel feel disjointed from the previous one. This includes some of the amphibian DNA-dinosaur DNA mix behaviors/traits, as well as Malcolm’s characterization.
What is great about this novel is the characters. The female and child characters are a VAST improvement from the previous novel (though there is WAY LESS reason for kids to be there this time, so…).
Overall, still a fun and easy read, but not nearly as good as the first novel.

-.25 Malcolm rambles. It can be boring. It was the same way in the first book. Malcolm would ramble on for pages.
This book is not for people without a high school education. A real 21st-century education. You should have at least taken high school biology or physics to understand what's in this book.

Grade-A sci fi thriller that nearly completely stands the test of time. Recently having rewatched the movie, the book is better--more believable and no "pause for dramatic one-liner" moments. (But the movie is still fun.)

Bad guys get their just desserts. Women characters are strong and smart and can be just as badass as the men. Plus all the chaos theory stuff makes it philosophical in a way, which is a neat touch.

There are a couple of scenes where characters do or say something that doesn't fit particularly well with who they are, and some mildly unbelievable physical feats, but nothing that made me want to stop reading.

Same flaws as the first book, but same draw too. Overall I enjoyed it, even more than the first I think.

Last time I was sick, I read The DaVinci Code. This time, I wanted an equally “smarty pants uses smarts to outsmart everything” adventure, and this scratched that itch. I have only vague memories of the movie but could still tell there were massive deviations from the book. Very enjoyable.
