I just didnt feel invested in the characters. I understand the metaphors the book was using, but I just didn’t connect.

Не один раз читал эту книгу, но с возрастом нахожу там все больше того, что не замечал, или, точнее, не понимал, ранее.
Стругацкие великолепны - очень глубокие размышления вызывает книга, которая при этом читается легко.

I overly enjoyed the constantly expanding city, from different viewpoint with different jobs. Lovely characters, it does feel like a big journey. Third book I read from them, I will read their others too.

I enjoyed this novel. Has very interesting philosophical and political messages that evolve dramatically along with the main character as the novel progresses. Actually I think the development of Andrei's character is fantastic overall. Beyond the main character, the supporting characters are also very interesting and diverse. The one kind of criticism I had was that there are parts in the final act of the book where I did not quite understand the message (especially the ending). May pick the book up again at some point. Regardless, this book is a great read for anyone who wants a cynical/realist analysis of soviet society (probably does more than just this, has a lot to say on society in general) through a sci-fi lense  with great characters.

I give this 4 stars not BC it's a enjoyable read but because it gives a lot to think about. It cover ideology and it's importance to the indervidual and community.
