A collection with some really phenomenal short stories! There were a few that were a miss for me, and the poetry was difficult for me to follow, but I thought the Editor’s Note was so thoughtful and that these short stories were really incredible: “A Whale Tale” by Allegra Hyde, “The Fox Marble” by Katherine Kim, “Is the Sky Falling or Are We Rising Toward the Lord?” by Mike McClelland, “What’s He Building in There” by Cat Powell, “The Death of Alexander the Great” by Zak Salih, and “Deep Sea Baby, I Follow You” by Addie Tsai. There were also a few others that I found thought provoking but weren’t quite up there for me!

(I read this actually earlier in the year, but it only now got added to Goodreads so I now remembered to add it here… Better later than never.)

Every time I critisize ”fairytale retellings”, my main point on contention is ”why retell the same stories time and time again when there are so many old and new fairytales to be told!!”

The stories on Fairy Tale Review is exactly what I want from the current fairytale canon. New and old tales, new and old themes, new and old ways of telling stories. The perfect union of the new and the traditional.

(I’m not the biggest fan of poems, but I liked the collection nontheless!)
