This is a strange book. I give it a star for the characters (well, most of the characters), and a star for the setting, since I'm a sucker for New English/Lovecraftian horror. The rest, though? The pacing was a bit off, like the book was a couple dozen pages too long.
And then there's the issue of the choice of main character. if you want to take a historical figure and make her a lesbian girlboss monster hunter, go ahead. That said, there are some choices for this that are better than others. Lizzie Borden is among the poorer choices one could make for their historical fiction heroine. It's one thing to recontextualize history, it's another to recontextualize a gruesome murder.
