What a wonderful treat for dark epic fantasy readers! This was such a great read because of the slow tease of information. A man wakes up in a dirty alley with no memory of his name, who he is or how he got there. He’s dressed in filthy clothes and at first, you’re drawing all sorts of conclusions. Only as pieces of the story are gradually reveled do we learn that Solomon has been banished from the world of the Folk for failing in a critical mission, and is now doomed to live in the human world forever. Fortunately, his friends are determined to get him back. I liked the way the backstories here were written with lots of gray areas. Only a few truly “evil” characters/creatures and lots of positions where you had just plain juicy conflict.

But things in the human world aren’t going so well either. We meet Lacey (a delightful character with her garden and spunky attitude), and soon discover creepy things are happening in the nearby woods… and to people she knows and loves. The world-building in this was complex and nicely done. Lots of tricky court politics and evil creatures (Soulgaunts) for our heroes to overcome as Solomon fights to make the human world and Greenweld safe with his magic sword!
