This has aged badly. Yellow Peril, the book.

It is also pretty boring, given how little actual danger seems to be present, and that the protagonist immediately gains the trust of everyone. There is an interesting set-up, killed by dull writing and characters as flat as a sheet of paper that has been rolled under something heavy.

If ever there was a book that needed some sort of MST3K commentary running behind it, this was it. I understand that it's a classic and for that, it deserves a certain modicum of respect. But beyond that? Boy oh boy, scifi - good scifi - that is, has come a long, long way. Or maybe, my generation just has trouble with the ooh-rah Americanism of books from this era. You know the type - the "we are American, therefore we are best, all others are stupid and strange-looking and weak" philosophy that seemed to die out somewhere in the seventies. I'm not saying the book was bad, persay, just that it was definitely a product of its time.

Disappointing. I should cut it quite a bit of slack since it's nearly 90 years old, but still...

I'd rather have spent the time re-watching some old episodes of the Buck Rogers TV series. Cheesy as they were, they were still more entertaining.

This book is racist and sexist. A man skips forward a few centuries into the future only to sleep with and marry the first woman he came across. From there he leads a war. That's it really. It is so obviously written by an American straight white man in the 1920s. I felt so uncomfortable reading this at times.

The original Buck Rogers story and a light pulpy read. Nothing spectacular but some fun sci-fi adventure (unfortunately mixed with terrible 1920s racism). As I have been reading a lot of overly experimental science fiction it's a bit of a nice brainless detox.
