OK HEAR ME OUT, I liked the first book more it pulled me right into the world, I didn’t mind the world building at all. This one took me awhile to get hooked on it…I know, I know. But that doesn’t mean that this one isn’t the MOST AMAZING book I’ve read in awhile. I don’t even have the words to process what I’ve read, and I finished this yesterday. I don’t understand the hate that it gets, yes some of it is a little repetitive but imo **SJM is a national treasure and needs to be protected at all costs.
**even if she left me on the most heartbreaking cliffhanger for the next 4 months :)))))))

Quite a slow one to get going but the last 200 pages made up for it! Obsessed with the twists and can’t wait to read the next one!

Consider myself entertained. This 800 page book was definitely 2 books in one.
A contemporary fiction about friendship and love in a fantasy setting. This is all the moments with the Bryce and her friends just living life and not significant to the plot at all. However, I enjoy contemporary fiction about a slice of life with no deeper plot side the value of friendship. It’s like watching friends…. Just a good time, but kinda trash. This was like half the book, maybe more. If you are not about that and just want business… this book is not for you.
It is also a mystery book in a fantasy setting. The whole crew was looking for a missing kid. I would consider myself a mystery novice. I have read only a few. But this one step closer, two steps back seems to me common in mystery novels. This was the second half of the book. I also found it entertaining.
Like House of Earth and Blood, while reading this book I was just along for the ride and not reading critically. This 100% made the book more enjoyable. However, even while not critically reading, I feel like SJM should have reveals want the rebel “cause” was. Like aside from the concentration camps, which were lightly glazed over, there was absolutely no insight on what fueled the rebels. We deserved a back story or something. Maybe I just got spoiled by reading One Piece but a corrupt government is such a great trope when done correctly.
Solid 3 stars. This series has done what books are meant to do, entertain the audience with a story. Not the most solid foundation but still a good time.
I will be reading the 3rd book.

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME
your name is WHAT SORRY
WHO
WHAT
HOW
I’ll be here patiently waiting book 3 and crying myself to sleep. Thanks.
Edit: the 65 tabs in this book will tell you how much I adore this book and this series. Every reread I find more information that could be important. And of course, every reread I screech like a banshee over the last few chapters.
There is too many unanswered questions, SJM. Bring on January 24
