Didn’t like the powerful down and the secret valley people were all dislikable. Way too many betrayals.

I absolutely love this book for the majority of the read. Seeing our main characters deal with the utter frustration of trying to communicate with his old family and tribe is equal parts annoying, hilarious and surprising. It’s a fun subversion of the “hero riding into his hometown on a horse” trope that we see in most fantasy. Instead, he’s met by people who either don’t believe him, think he’s far weaker than he is, and people who are constantly betraying him or trying to cheat him in some way. It makes sense in a way that Lindon is annoyed because this is exactly how Lindon behaved to everyone when we first meet him, and probably why Jai Long hated the guy for so long. It’s just hilarious how terrible these people are.

It also brings up an interesting question while reading the book that’s deeper I think than a lot of the other books. At what point are these people not worth saving? How many heroes have to die while trying to rescue a group of people that don’t know they need rescuing?

This entire section of the book is excellent and was even better than I anticipated. Where I started to get a little bored though was once the real threat emerges and we have another 40% of the book to go that’s mostly fight scenes and escape scenes. It was just too much action with only a few clever fights. I also didn’t quite understand the big climax of the book and the abilities used, but it could be that I was reading the book in the middle of the night with the flu.

Overall it’s an excellent book and I’m still very excited for the home stretch in these final 3 books!
