The Lighthouse at the End of the World by Jules Verne

Reads more like an outline for a novel than an actual novel. On another note, the movie based on the book from the early 1970's is wild and campy: The Light at the Edge of the World with Yul Brynner as the pirate (of course)!

Not my favorite Jules Verne tale but had to read it in its new English translation. Totally bleak story but keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a straight up adventure tale.

There may be good academic reasons for making this book available, but I'm not sure that it will please that many of Verne's non-academic readers, unless they're completists. It wasn't published, or even finished, during his lifetime, and the translation reads to me as slightly off-key on several occasions. People with a solid nautical grounding might find the considerable detail provided adds to their enjoyment. Alas, I didn't.
