I've enjoyed the ID channel show, Homicide Hunter, so I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy of this book. I recognized some of the cases discussed in the book from the show but it was still interesting to read cases from his perspective and see what triggered the murders. I also enjoyed the last chapter where Kenda discussed his life after the show and how it helped him to release some of the trauma he dealt with as a homicide detective. His writing is as witty as he is on TV. I'm sure that a good sense of humor is an great survival mechanism in that line of work.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me an audiobook copy of this book.
I just thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have watched Homicide Hunters and loved it, so it was a no-brainer to request this book.
Obviously, murder and homicides are heavy topics. Kenda is able to tell his stories with tasteful humor and bluntness. To be honest, he does at times seem a little full of himself, but I expected that since that is how the show is too.
Each case he explains, has a trigger (money, revenge etc) that he says at the beginning of the chapter. I could picture each case in my head as an episode of Homicide Hunters and it was made better by the fact that Joe Kenda himself narrated it.
Kenda's writing style was great, I found myself laughing out loud several times a chapter because he called the suspects "frick and frack" or how one of the canines didn't like anyone except him.
If you enjoy all those true crime shows out there and want to step into true crime books, or are looking for another one to add to your collection, I definitely recommend this one.

I love Homicide Hunter and have told all my friends and family that if I ever come up missing that they should all him, because he will find me! This book was so easy to read. I recognized a few of the cases from show episodes, but it was nice to read even more information about the case. I also loved how he described the effects of his job on his mental health and his family. Perfect gift for a true crime junkie and a definite purchase for libraries.
I am a big fan of true crime, and a big fan of Homicide Hunter. When I found out that Joe Kenda had written a book, I was incredibly excited. When NetGalley gave me the opportunity to get an advanced copy, I was elated. I devoured this novel in a few days, and I can confidently say that it is the best true crime novel I have read. Kenda’s voice is extremely strong throughout the novel. I felt as if I was sitting down and having a conversation with him. What really made this book for me was Kenda’s attitude towards the victims. He cares deeply about each of his victim’s regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, etc. This was clear in his accounts of the cases he describes throughout this novel. I would definitely read more from Kenda, and look at Homicide Hunter with a new lens.
This book. Oh, man, this book. What can I say? 10/5 stars.
I loved Kenda's first book about his life as a detective, and this second book "Killer Triggers" is even better. I laughed SO HARD at some of the anecdotes that were true Kenda humor. Like the ones about police K9s. Also, Kenda shares some stories about how being a detective affected his personal life, and it seems like his wife has a pretty strong sense of humor as well!
I loved that each chapter focused on a specific case (instead of a jumble of cases making up each chapter) but also that Kenda wasn't afraid to go off on tangents on occasion.

3.5 - You'll recognize the stories in the book if you've mainlined Homicide Hunter like I sometimes do.
Let me start off by saying the moment I first saw Joe Kenda on tv I fell in love with his snarky, no shit taking attitude. So when I saw that he had another book coming out I had to have it.
In Killer Triggers Joe Kenda shares his perspective on what causes someone to kill through different cases he has faced throughout his career. I went into this book hoping to learn a bit more about what makes a killer kill and I was not disappointed. I also loved how Joe’s snarky attitude played out on the pages just like in the tv show. This man means business and had an amazing career as a detective. It was so insightful to see his thoughts during his cases and after.
The only thing I was a bit disappointed in was that most of these cases I remember from the tv show. I was hoping to learn about some cases we haven’t heard of before. But if you aren’t and avid watcher of Homicide Hunter this won’t be an issue for you.
Overall I really enjoyed Killer Triggers. I will read and watch anything Joe Kenda does in the future. If you are looking for a true crime novel that has a narrator that will make you laugh as well as give you insight into a killers thoughts then this book is for you.
