I LOVED this book. I like true crime, but I hadn't read any true crime books. I'm from the area Joe Kenda was in charge of, and I really enjoyed hearing his stories.

The way he writes and narrates reminds me of sitting down with an old friend and hearing them tell stories to me.

Finishing this book, was the same feeling of spending time with an old friend, and then sadly realizing it's time to go and you may not see them for a while.

I'm absolutely going to read his other books, and keep watching the shows.

I honestly have never watched an episode of Investigation Discovery’s Homicide Hunter. However, after finishing this audio book, I now am going to go back and check out this show. As someone that is a true crime fan and who lives in Colorado; I do remember hearing about some of the cases featured in this book.

The cases were intriguing. Yet, it was Lt. Kenda that really brought them to life and made this audio book. In fact, if I see more books by Lt. Kenda, I will only listen to them on audio if he is the narrator. His no holds bar attitude is so refreshing. I recommend this audio book to true crime fans. It is safe to say that this is a five star book for me.

DID NOT FINISH

Flabbergasted by the 5 star reviews. With a name like "Killer Triggers", I expected this to be more about the psychology and sociology behind homicidal behavior.

This... wasn't that. At first I was settling into the audiobook, it was like having coffee with a griseled detective letting you in on some of his favorite stories. At first I liked the casualness of it even if it was a bit hard to keep track of the tangets. I liked how he talked about the German Shepherd police dog and the difficulty in notifying families of a death. Sure, it took away from the flow of the story and made it difficult for me to focus on the case at hand, but it was fairly interesting... until it wasn't. I was listening to this book on a walk and I was about 15 minutes in before I realized I hadn't learned anything about the case or the trigger or anything more than how much this guy likes to hear himself talk.

I also enjoyed the salty and straight forward language until I didn't. In the first case he calls the two perpetrators "dopes", which... okay, the crime was stupid and messy, but I felt that this was a distraction from the actual case. This is supposed to be a book about triggers, and this is the chapter on money, and instead we're talking about how stupid a couple of 17 year olds are?

But I lost it when Kenda starts going on a tirade about how parents who allow their children to lie and don't instill fear into them raise criminals. Like... yeah... if only more parents spanked we could eliminate crime forever? That makes... sense? Blame the parents and call kid stupid and say the trigger for their crime is money but don't even explore the socioeconomic problems that may have led a couple of teenagers to this point in the first place. Doesn't sound like this is a book about killer Triggers at all.

I rage quit the book. Full on stopped in the middle of my walk and found a new book to listen to.

I never watched this guy's show, never read any of his other books, and I never will. I enjoy true crime when it is based on facts. Serious investigation and analysis based on scientific evidence. This was weak.

Narrated by Joe Kenda

If you enjoy watching Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda, true crime documentary show, you will love this book. The audiobook is read by Kenda, which really enriches the book. I read his last book, [b:I Will Find You: Killer Cases from My Life in Crime|34630682|I Will Find You Killer Cases from My Life in Crime|Joe Kenda|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1514599025l/34630682._SX50_.jpg|55658052] and enjoyed it I could hear his voice in my head. BUT listening to this one on audio hearing his actual wry voice just makes it so much better. I Will Find You is more of his memoir on how he became a homicide detective; Killer Triggers is more about the cases on his show. Kenda often says there are only so many motives for murder, and this book demonstrates them. I would recommend watching a few episodes of Homicide Hunter as it will add your enjoyment of this book.

***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss, and a copy of the audiobook through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

Are you familiar with Joe Kenda? You might know him from his show Homicide Hunter or the first season of the podcast Detective. He’s a retired homicide detective who had a long career solving many murders.

In Killer Triggers, he talks to us about a number of cases and how they were solved. If you are interested in true crime or watch murder mystery shows - I think you’ll be very interested to hear these stories.

Joe Kenda is also an interesting guy with a very specific voice who doesn’t hold back on how he feels - whether it’s calling a criminal an idiot or sharing his opinions on tv news anchors. I highly recommend reading this as the audiobook so you can hear the stories directly from Kenda. I also appreciated that he included some stories about what it’s been like since he retired and had the tv show - sometimes being recognized by fans.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance listening copy.
