This one never pulled me in. Venice never really came alive to me, which is a real shame, because it's such a great place to set a book like this. I liked the kids quite a lot, but the adults seemed so unadultlike (yeah, it's not a word, but it accurately describes them) as to border on the absurd. The Thief Lord's mystery and the secret of the wooden wing had so much potential, but the story didn't do them justice. I didn't hate the book, but I so wanted to love it...and I didn't.

I tried to get over the “paint your face black as a disguise bc you’re white” thing. BUT TWICE??? Twice we kept that in there??

It totally ruined the entire whimsical theme of the book.

I saw the movie before I knew it was based off of a book so when I found out about the book I had to read it. The book is absolutely amazing! I loved every word of it.
