I didn't particularly love this issue, however the story reeled me in. I want to read at least 2 more issues before I judge the story. Artwork fit well with the story.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this series, but I’ve got to say, after only one issue I’m hooked. It’s so unique and not like any of the other series out there right now. But at the same time some of the themes being used feel familiar. The end result is something that is both recognizable and fascinating.
They did a good job starting off this series. We now have a good grasp of most of the players in this field, from the antagonists, protagonists, and even possibly a gray scale character or two. Plus we even got a good idea of what can happen to the innocents caught in between.

Unique. Adventurous. Sides of simplistic.

Although I am going to read Vol 2, I wasn't blown out of the water like I thought I might get will give it another shot to get there and looking forward to it. My expectations might have been the problem, but here's my breakdown:

Art: definitely the most appealing part of the series. Catching portrayals, dark and colorful simultaneously, folks of color everywhere and attractive in a sketchy way - enjoyed it all!

Story: this magic/mystery/dimensional/historical storylines going on are very interesting. They leave me yearning though, wanting more of a mature twist to it rather than what feels like more of a childish one. I absolutely love the layered idea of the origin of these monsters but would like more from their dekivery. Doesn't harm the story but does provide a glass ceiling for me between like and love. The writing is good - the ideas are great, would like those two things to meet more holistically.

Give it a go for a quality adventurous romp w/ significant cultural ties.
