“Here are the facts of her case”. Told in the style of a courtroom argument, Winter’s picture book outlines the life and memorable career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG). From her early life as daughter to two immigrant parents to her pursuit of her law career to her appointment to the highest court in the country, the text highlights examples of gender inequality RBG experienced and fought to eliminate. This empowering tale highlights the importance of perseverance to one’s convictions in the face of challenges. Vivid watercolor illustrations interspersed with text add to the book’s visual appeal and interest. The back includes a glossary of terms and a detailed biographical author’s note.

A highly readable literary nonfiction for a middle grade collection, this story is another strong picture book biography from Winter, and makes a nice complement to similar contemporary juvenile nonfiction titles such as "I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark".

What a creative book!  Written in a format similar to a case exhibit (even with evidence!), Winter and Innerst make a compelling argument for RBG.  She already had two strikes against her when she was born--she was both a woman and Jewish.  Not only that, but she was consistently pushed down by the patriarchy in ways that I can hardly imagine.  But she persisted.

This was probably one of the best biographies I've read all year: it was compelling, energetic, and hit all the right spots.  Not to mention, of course, Innerst's wonderful illustrations which sometimes appear similar to actual court case illustrations.  All in all, it's a wonderful educational book.

Review cross-listed here!

Great intro to kids about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her life and what she’s done for women’s rights. Great illustrations! I love the glossary of terms in the back too.

The author's liberal perspective showed through the wording in places — the book was not totally objective — but R.B.G. is an amazing woman and this presents her story well.

This is a cute picture book. Would definitely recommend for students at a low reading level who are looking for a queen-goddess to look up to. The illustrations are lovely, and I liked how the author presented the book as a court case, complete with evidence!
