This was a slow start for me, but then definitely picked up pace. I love a good mermaid/siren story. I especially love one with diverse characters. I loved the juxtaposition of the main character’s personalities. A very “fighting the evil within” kind of vibe, but in a way that pulls out empathy. Interested to see where the second book takes the story when it comes out.

I was hooked right away! It does remind me of the Cruel Prince especially with how this ends which is unfortunate for me because I hated that series... I think this will be better though! I loved all the moments between Saoirse and Hayes!! And can't wait for them to be reunited!

A siren named Saoirse wins this military competition and is ordered  to protect Prince Hayes who’s a water Faye (fairy?) because Hayes’s father locked down the kingdom under the guise of safety but really it was to remove all species more powerful than Fayes, besides witches. And sirens have long ago been extinguished aside from Saoirse (that we know of so far) so she pretends to be another species, while secretly killing people from a mysterious employer (who she thinks) is sending her “bad” creatures/species to take out. Well after being hired to protect Hayes, the kingdom starts looking for “the siren” (she disguises herself during the day with these magical beads) while this underground resistance group is trying to overthrow the kingdom and open up the borders.
Turns out the border is bound to the King, Queen and Prince Hayes through blood and magical ties. So if they’re all killed, the border comes down and the kingdom is freed.
This story wasn’t awful, but there was a bit too much focus on the boring “enemies to lovers” trope and I wanted more talk of magic and powers! I wish there was more description of each species, and it was annoying to wait so long to find out what species Saoirse’s sister Rain was.
She’s human as of right now. She might have some powers in the second book (hopefully) because that reveal would be cool!
I also wish there was more background on the Prince Hayes. I’m going to read the second book because there were too many things left unwrapped, but I’m hoping and that Saoirse and Hayes are less whiny and annoying.
