I enjoyed this historical romance. I really love how the lady heroine has a secret organization that helps abused women escape and start a new life. I love how the main guy was super sweet and funny. This book definitely had some action and mystery in it which I did like. Unfortunately at some parts I just felt like the chemistry wasn’t there at some parts. I love the main characters but the romance itself took a back burner to the story and was just a good romantic story for me.

I struggled with this book. I am a big fan of this author’s and adored her previous series (the Carlisles), but after reading this book, I’m not sure if this new series is going to be for me. This is a romance with a strong murder mystery element, one that points to a larger, nefarious organization that will be the focus of the series. This book very much felt like it was setting up the larger conspiracy that is to come in future books; the romance was not as central to the plot, or as developed, as I would have liked. The characters’ relationship felt rushed, and their personalities were also underdeveloped. I don’t feel like I know these characters or what motivates their love for each other all that well.

I will definitely read the next book in the series, because I love Anna Harrington and know she is a talented writer. It could be this type of mystery romance just isn’t for me, but would work well for other readers.

I received an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Danielle Williams has dedicated her life to secretly helping abused women. Marcus Braddock dedicated his life to defending the crown. When Marcus returns home after being at war and discovers the death of his sister, and Danielle's best friend is not all that it seems, he makes it his mission to uncover the truth. But uncovering the truth might endanger themselves in the process. Marcus vows to save Danielle, but who will save him? A delightful dramatic romance novel with solid characters and just the right amount of suspense.

This book is fast paced and filled with intrigue. Danielle is a woman ahead of her time. She runs a secret organisation that helps women who are abused to escape with a new identity.  It is dangerous work. Marcus is a family friend who returns from war as a decorated hero. Danielle has always admired him but her feelings develop even more when she finds herself united with Marcus to hunt down the killer of his sister. Marcus admires her and the feelings are mutual. Along the way, there are twists and turns making this a compelling read. The only flaw is Danielle's sometimes irrational insistence in throwing herself into dangerous situations.  She is headstrong to the point of being annoying. However,  Marcus perseveres. Overall, great read!
