Midnight Moonrising by K. S. Haigwood , Anne Conley
I usually stay away from audible books because they are such a hassle to get over to my tablet.
This one transferred and was waiting for me! Other have me and the author stumped for weeks til they send me a different format.
This book starts with Mena, her ex's funeral. He was the pack leader and how she's the leader. None of her friends knew he was a werewolf.
Others in important positions have her back and she won't be going to jail at all...
Her inner wolf wants her to do other things and she is strong...
She needs a right hand man and Darrin fills the spot but 27 others want the spot also. He orients her to the duties and other questions she has about the pack.
Her inner wolf wants to kill Phoenix so she can have Alex, the detective to herself.
They hope the witches have the answers to the killings...There are a lot of other creatures introduced that help also.
What I do like, even though to me it's all a fairytale is that there are problems and I like the way they find creative solutions to them.
Think I would like to read the next book if it's the end of the series but it's not really my genre but I enjoyed the series so far.
I received this review book from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Very well-written

This book was a pleasant surprise! There were a ton of characters and POVs, but I never got confused or annoyed with the switching. I also loved Phoenix. My heart broke and healed for him in this book. This wasn't a complete "omg, can't put it down book" so I took off a star, but I still really liked it!

Midnight Moonrising is an exciting, complex, and steamy PNR. The characters are easy to connect with and relate to. I loved the comedic moments where they would joke and tease each other.  Especially as the guys competed for Mena's heart! I literally laughed out loud several times and it was these times that made me grateful I was listening to the audiobook in my own office.

The story is fast-paced with several plot twists that kept me on my toes and begging for more. The ending of the story wraps up the mystery in a way that doesn't leave a cliffhanger, but leads into another storyline. I already have book 2 downloaded, so I can find out what happens next!

DNF. I was very confused. I thought I was reading the first book in a series, but it was pretty clear that I had missed something that came before. The audiobook narrator made it a chore to listen to, with a slow robotic voice that had odd inflections. While I liked the concept of having a dual personality where each side of you was attracted to another person, it didn't really play out how I'd like. Ultimately, due to the above issues, I found it too hard to follow and enjoy the story, so I didn't finish it.

It took a while for me to really get into this story, but once it picks up it really picks up!

I love Mena! I have character envy for sure. The writing is fabulous and there are almost no errors.

Totally worth it!

I'm reviewing the Audible version of this book.

Overall: 4 Stars
Performance: 4 Stars
Story: 4 Stars

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, the story was enjoyable, well-paced, and well performed. I would advise to read or listen to the first book: "Accepting the Moon: Prequel (Moonrising Book 0)." I had to stop and go find it so I would have a better understanding. I could have continued without doing so, but I'm a bit finicky about that stuff.

The main story was completed in this edition, but there is still a story arc or two that will/can continue in future books.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Midnight Moonrising?
I actually have two that are tied for first. 1) When Alex revealed the name of his dog...err...wolf. 2) When Ace told Phoenix he smelled like cotton candy. Both moments had me giggling out loud in the middle of the restaurant where I was having lunch.

What does Pyper Down bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I'm not sure. It took a long while to get used to her voice. Once I did, it was easier to differentiate between the characters and get into a rhythm of listening.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
There were definitely moments that was really into the story and wishing I didn't have to return to my job. Alas, life doesn't allow for 14 hours of story time. *lol*

Any additional comments?

K.S. Haigwood did it AGAIN! This book gives you everything that you want in a book. After reading and reviewing “Accepting the Moon,” I couldn’t wait to try this one out. I was extremely lucky to get this book in exchange for an honest review. So here it goes….

K.S. brought back characters we all know and love from the prequel “Accepting the Moon.” These characters were set up in such a dynamic and interesting way that seeing where this journey takes them is something I was really looking for in this book. I have to admit to reading it twice. Both times I found something new that I didn’t notice before. Those types of stories are the most fun to read. I love that nothing goes in a straight line. The story isn’t perfect. There are complications and twists and turns.

K.S. manages to bring a sense of humanity to paranormal creatures. It makes the stories more enjoyable. In a way, most women have connected to Mena’s strength and spunk and fell for Phoenix’s charm and caring nature. I got a chance to take this journey with these characters. I enjoyed every second of the ride. It only took one sitting to finish the entire book the first time and one sitting for the next time I read it. K.S. is an incredible author! I can’t wait to read another one of her books. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to jump into another world head first and experience never ending adventure.

DNF @ 70% - I just couldn't care about any of the characters, the motivations were thin and the plot weakly developed. Plus skipping ahead to find out they
Spoileradd a third love interest in the final act and end on a cliffhanger, plus the whole series is unfinished and left on a cliffhanger
left me not caring to continue subjecting myself to this book.

This review is a long time coming - I actually read the book several months ago and am STILL thinking about it.

Overall reading experience/ content:
What's so fun about Haigwood's books is they stay with you - I still find myself drifting back to the island (See her Eternal Island series) and also drifting periodically into Montgomery and thinking about some of these characters.
She has a way of designing characters that stay with you.

I read Accepting the Moon last year and absolutely loved it - couldn't put it down. So naturally I was left wanting more and thrilled when Haigwood released this brilliant follow up! Mena is a brilliantly designed character, consistent, despite the fact that she's sharing herself with her wolf for most of this. Watching her struggle to find herself and make peace with her wolf is enlightening and as they fight over the different men they love - two of them for Mena - it's all so wonderfully suspenseful and full of indecisiveness. I'm a fan of Phoenix. Ace is pig-headed and immature BUT I understand the bond Mena feels with him. It's all so well thought out that it almost seems natural - as if she's merely telling us a true story.

Continuity -
This is great, I didn't find any discrepancies.
Even with the two authors - they clearly work well together. (By the way, you cannot go wrong with either of them!)

Editing/Proofing:
Not a lot of errors found - seems professionally edited.

Formatting -
The formatting is actually really gorgeous , as always with Haigwood's books.
The whole book is a beautiful work of art, presentation-wise.

Cover -
Looks to be professionally done, well designed and it's pretty and relevant.

Overall 4.5 out of 5 stars.
It isn't perfect, but it's pretty damn close.

Mena has just taken over as alpha for the Montgomery, AL wolf pack after she killed her husband, the former alpha. She's a moonrising wolf, which means utter destruction if Mena can't get her under control. Her wolf wants Alex-the police detective sent to investigate the death of her husband. Mena wants Phoenix, the master vampire in Montgomery. Wolves & vampires are not supposed to mix, but she has started an alliance with them. Her pack has to do something to keep the moonrising wolf from taking over so they start calling alphas across the world trying to find one who will willing bond with her. In comes Ace, alpha of the Las Vegas lion clan. They discover that they can't be apart without risk to one or both of them dying. What do they do when one lives in Nevada & one in Alabama? Make a compromise.

I love all the characters in this series. They are well-developed & well-written. Each character has their own personality. Pyper Down is the Audible narrator & she's great. She gives inflection & different voices for each character. Put this on TBR or TBL list.
