This book is my first introduction to Toni Morrison and was truly unlike anything I’ve ever read before. One of the only books in my memory that has made me feel physically ill— not in a way that is seeking shock from the reader, but in the way in which the scenes are painted starkly and without mercy but still in poetry-like prose. I read Morrison’s foreword before, but reading it again after I read was a good reminder about the reasons behind the book and the effects of the complicity and hatred which allowed Pecola to be so deeply failed. My heart aches for Pecola and this story will stick with me.

This is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read, and Toni Morrison has made a new fan out of me. The only criticism I have is that I enjoyed the first half of the book a lot more than the second half. That being said,  I can understand why books that make us feel uncomfortable are important.

It’s obvious why this book is so important. It deals with a lot very deftly, and stylistically it reads like poetry. Hard to read at times, but how could it not be?
