This has great illustrations along with clever, pun-filled epitaphs that I truly enjoyed reading. I got this from my school library and read it with a couple of students. I then took it home for my twelve year old who loves a good pun. She loved it.

I'm not morbid enough for this book. Too icky for me. Fans of "dark humor" might appreciate this more.

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall as Yolen and Lewis collaborated on this. I bet it would also be fun to see the "outtakes" of the poems that didn't make the final cut. It is such a relief to read something that is very clever and thought-provoking, if a bit morbid. I would love to have students create their own, complete with illustrations. This is good for a re-read, too, because you might miss things the first time. I loved the owl,
"Hit by a pellet
some other owl cast,
he asked, "Who?" quietly
as he passed." (and an owl pellet is passed, too)

This book of poems is not for the faint of heart!
It is for those of us with a darker sense of humor. Each page gives you a laugh and some very nice illustrations to accmpany the prose.
I was reminded of the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" series I read when I was younger.
Enjoy!

Although it has puns for days, this book felt a bit much to be classified as a child's poetry book.

Clever and gruesome - not really my kind of book, but fresh and unique

I think this book is hilarious. My kids definitely don't "get" it, but they like that I like it. I love Jane Yolen in general, so when I found this at the local thrift store I had to buy it. The word play in it is great!
