This book is great because it reminded me why I enjoy reading. The relatively simple writing style really helped pull me into the story because of its natural flow and sort of movie-ish depiction of the events. I loved the characters and think that they were the highlight of this.
I will say though that I feel like this book could be a bit shorter, in that I felt sort of hungry for more action. My main critique is that I felt like this was building up to something, but it just kept building without enough payoff. This didn’t feel as much like a fantasy epic and more of an in-depth character study set in a fantasy universe, which I think holds value in its own right. Really it comes down to personal taste.
But overall, I think this is set up very nicely to lead into later books, and it’s a series I plan to continue.

ADHD brain hated the classic sweeping fantasy slow burn, but the payoff at the end was almost worth slogging through the set up for like eight months. My partner wanted me to read this and it was nice to be able to discuss it with him, so I might read the second one because I'm a nice girlfriend and also he said it wasn't as slow to start. If he's lied I'm getting a divorce.

I can fix Kaladin, I can. I can fix him.
