Hmmm. this deserves better than 3, but it doesn't qualify for "really liked it," either. While Crace does an excellent job portraying Leonard and I enjoyed reading about him, he isn't particularly likable and the women in his life don't treat him well. Sometimes that's just not fun to read no matter how well it's written. The events in novel were interesting and enjoyable to ponder.

i love Jim Crace this is probably not the best of his books but he does manage to get a lot across in a surprisingly small amount tof time. It is about nerve or the lack of it and what it means for the novels protaganists

No stars, folks. I couldn't read through far enough to see if our very boring sax player ever sucked it up and stood up for himself or anything!

Meh. I couldn't finish this one, although I had been looking forward to reading it, because I enjoyed Pesthouse so much. Crace's new novel does feature a particularly fine passage about a solo jazz performance, but beyond that, it's another story of another aging man doing stupid things, thinking all along "I know better than to do this, but somehow, I just can't help myself" and then repenting of it later on, after consquences ensue. Which can be very interesting, but I'm DONE with the male mid-life crisis genre. DONE.
