Wow this book is great. The characters were interesting, the story compelling. I couldn’t put it down. Really great vehicle to examine the nature of power, and human nature and how society changes our perception of those things. My only complaint is there was no discussion of trans or non-binary individuals, and considering the book was centred around gender and sex it seemed missing, and I kept asking myself how they would address it.

From an original premise; this was an engaging exploration of power and gender and human nature. I did struggle to connect with some of the protagonists... they got lost in the philosophical, global, political science and international relations aspects. Still enjoyable and very imaginative writing which I enjoyed greatly.

Great idea but terrible execution. Really loved the concept of this book and was excited to read it, but disappointingly it just didn’t quite hit. It didn’t get interesting until about 2/3rds of the way in and then it just ended very unremarkably. The storyline was scattered and failed to grip me, and the characters were all a bit meh

Super cool premise! I didn’t really care for the story itself but I love the concept overall! Interesting but not captivating (to me).

Really interesting exploration of the interaction between power and human nature.

I want to disagree with the author's overall conclusion that strength is the ability to do harm, and the immediate response to having strength is to cause harm. But disagreeing feels like a bit of a hard sell these days.

In addition to the deeper themes, it's also just a nice girl power read with a unique science/magic twist.

The power

If I’m more honest about my rating, it would be four stars, but I wanted to give five because I appreciated the novelty of the concept behind the story. Imagine: if females weren’t the physically weaker sex, what would happen to the patriarchy? What would happen to female-male dynamics? What would happen in countries that have gender inequality?
*spoiler*

The conclusion that it reaches is a dismal truth; people do horrible things because they can, because they have the power to, and it doesn’t really matter which gender is in control.
