I normally wouldn’t pan a book so openly, but the French author passed almost 30 years ago, so I doubt neither he nor his estate would be traumatized by an English review. The premise of the book is that a young man visits his aunts in Paris and learns they are held hostage by some gangsters. The man, a homosexual, engaging with two spinster octogenarian women tormented by gangsters sounds like a fun ride. In truth, this book had no real plot and didn’t make much sense. The narrator has the same name as the author, and though this is allegedly fiction, it’s hard to tell where the two meet in the blurriest of boundaries. Soon the book turns into another novel and ends with letters or journal entries. I didn’t follow this book at all. The only saving grace is that it was short and so I didn’t have to attend to this mess for too long. Maybe I missed the point entirely and I would gladly hear from others who did appreciate this book, but I could not. ★ • Paperback • Fiction? • Purchased from a used bookstore online. ◾︎
