A fun little rhyming book about a mermaid girl’s first day of school. Very sweet but not cutesy.

Add this title to your beginning of the school year read aloud list. Mermaid School looks at all of the scary and amazing things that come with starting a new school. The sing-songy rhyming text adds a lovely read aloud aspect, and the illustrations are perfect tones for a book about a school under water. One of my favorite parts though may be the school handbook in the back matter! It was quite funny, and it would be a lot of fun for kids to make their own handbooks for different types of schools.

Rhyming was a little forced but kids will like this book.

This book is about a mermaid's first day of mermaid school. The sentences rhyme as they introduce how mermaids go to school. Would make a great read aloud for mermaid fans.

Sweet book and nice for read-aloud. Maybe some might think the rhymes a bit cutesy, and that could be true, but I also enjoyed the fanciful flights of the verses, and the gentle emphasis on friendliness during the first days of school.

A few fun wordplays kept me entertained and the Mermaid School Rules and Clubs at the end were a nice touch. My 5 year old likes it!

I love when authors go all in when creating fantastical worlds. And Joanne Stewart Weztal jumps in with both feet in Mermaid School, a back-to-school book for denizens of the deep. The young students have cubbies for their "tailpacks," they memorize the alphabet by singing the "A-B-Seas," and the children are accompanied by trumpetfish in music class. And to add to the ocean theme, the illustrations by Julianna Swaney are watercolors! The language has a lovely rhythm and rhyme, making it a wonderful read-aloud to small groups or one-on-one.
