Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler by Tom King

A blisteringly high bar to set for the series inspired by The Killing Joke's "one bad day" concept. It recontextualises the Riddler into a formidable and grounded character, it is wordy but Tom King's dialogue is almost second to none. And the art is incredible. It ends with the same concept of the gut punch as The Killing Joke did. An origin story that incorporates Batman but isn't dominated by him.

here’s the thing… i thought this was just decent, just okay. i definitely think i would have enjoyed it a lot more if it hadn’t been written by tom king. the plot was interesting and somewhat engaging. the art was amazing. the overall execution however? sorely lacking. i just do not like the way tom king tells his stories. the way the plot developed and the way king characterized these characters were just not very good imo. so yeah… this is probably the last time i give him a chance, at least when it comes to batman

I've always really liked Riddler. And I've also been mostly disappointed by how he is written in a lot of stories. This is the most threatening Riddler has ever felt in anything. And I love this a lot.

One Bad Day is a series that takes the route set by Batman: The Killing Joke, which shows us how The Joker became The Joker: through one bad day. This series explores that same thing, but for Batman's other rogues. This one, of The Riddler.

The art style of this novel is incredible. I'm not sure what to call this style, but I've always been a huge fan of it. This water colour like look. Is that what it is? I'm not sure. I also really like the character designs here.

Now, taken by itself, this book does have a banger of an ending. But I take away one star because it's almost identical to the ending of The Killing Joke.

The confrontation between Batman and The Riddler and the conversation they have.
That's all I have to say of it.

Art is gorgeous, but story this is trying so hard to be edgy.

I’ve never read stories of The Riddler & Batman. I read The Riddler : Year One #1, a prequel to the Riddler in The Batman. This one was excellent BUT this Batman - One Bad Day top it all!!!!! The ending blew my mind, I was getting frustrated but wow! The story, the drawing, everything! I’m gonna read the other One Bad Day.
