Amnesty is set in Australia and centres on Dhananjaya (now known as Danny), a Sri Lankan who entered Australia on a student visa but remained even after he quit his course. He works as a cleaner and does his best to avoid calling attention to himself. When one of his clients is murdered and he has crucial information he is torn as to whether or not to contact the police since doing so could lead to his deportation. We share his thoughts and interactions over the day as he wrestles with this decision. The book highlights racism in Australia, issues with education courses targetted at international students, inconsistencies with the immigration system, barriers for refugees, the lack of solidarity between immigrants even those from the same country and more. However, I struggled with the book. The tone and style just didn’t really work for me. It’s possible that listening on audio amplified this and I may have connected more (or at least disconnected less) had I had a print copy to read. While I appreciated some of the issues highlighted I didn’t really enjoy the reading experience.
