If you're looking for a short book to add to your fall frights TBR, I would highly recommend Cat Out of Hell as a solid choice!
How do you know if this book will be the right fit? Well...
If you believe that cats are the agents of satan and want to murder you but keep you around for the free food, this book might be for you! No seriously, that's part of this story.
Alternatively, if you love cats, this one might be hit or miss for you. I happen to love cats and still enjoyed this book. The story has some seriously dark elements (murder, loss of one's spouse, devil worship, obliquely referenced child abuse, etc.) and follows the adventures of wanna-be playwright Wiggie and retired librarian Alec as they are led by Roger the cat on a quest to vanquish the Captain the powers given to him by Beelzebub. If you have about 5 hours, I recommend the audiobookâyou'll be in for a wild time no matter which format you choose!
I, personally, picked this audiobook up specifically for the narrator (all the stars for Mike Grady!), and maybe got more than I bargained for. I went into this completely blind about the author and genre besides "humor (fiction)" as tagged by my library. I didn't realize that this was a horror comedy.
Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy horror. Normally, I just like to be prepared for it. After getting through the first 3rd, I gave the book a rest, and I thoroughly enjoyed finishing it up today. It's a little dark, a little sarcastic, and a lot of fun. The book thumbs its nose a little at academics and our feline companions but in a way that feels like the teasing of a sarcastic old friend.
