First Red October nonfiction pick. Tolstoy has many great ideas about art, but I disagree with his thoughts on Beethoven.

Even if I don’t agree with all of it, it’s clear and provocative, and has shaped my views on the matter. There is much that I do agree with and that is important to consider. Tolstoy was evidently a very interesting and independent thinker, and a man of strong moral conviction. I’ve never really considered the old question, “If you could invite three people from history, who would they be?” until now, but as I write this I think Tolstoy would make the cut.

Tolstoy writes What is Art without considering anything outside of a European perspective and a Christian perspective. Unfortunately, the world does not operate in that fashion. Because of this Tolstoy's claims fall flat across the book. There are some intriguing ideas presented, but I see no substantial evidence to prove his ideas. That conclusion is excellent and brings up ideas that should have been mentioned in the body of the work. I wish Tolstoy had written more on his thoughts on science because of it.
