The story is about the beauty of a flute. The children in the story play the instrument and describe it using colours, for example, 'It sounds like yellow, easy and mellow'. The story could be used to inspire music or poetry or children could create their own music to base their poetry around. The book is very short with few words, however, the words used are powerful. I would use the book with FS and KS1 children.

A clever book that explores the beautiful possibilities of a single instrument. It could be used to inspire music, poetry and art lessons. A class could look at the vibrant flowers and consider the sounds of nature. They could write poetry after listening to different pieces of music and have a go at creating their own.

A delightful sequel to The Drum. This time, Wilson-Max and Ronca focus on the colours and sights within nature that a brought to mind by the different sounds made when playing the flute. A lovely poetic read, and one that is a reminder of just how powerful music is in evoking feelings and memories.
On a side note, The Flute might make a nice companion text with Here Comes Frankie by Tim Hopgood. There is room for some excellent opportinities for comparing how music brings together communities and can stimulate more than just one sense. Synesthesia also springs to mind here, whether it is intentional or not!

In those early years, children are fascinated by songs, music and sounds. They might improvise their singing or simply enjoy playing with and repeating songs and nursery rhymes that appeal to them.

What is so wonderful about Tiny Owl's little 'Children Music Life' series is that is embraces this idea of hearing, listening, vocalising, playing, moving and dancing and exploring music and noting how it can be a invisible strum into the rhythm of the the world.

In Flute, the sequel to [b:The Drum|42413797|The Drum|Ken Wilson-Max|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1540205035i/42413797._SX50_.jpg|66111147], Wilson-Max and Ronca reunite to show us a rich, brightly-coloured word enriched through the celebration of music. Short sentences share with us how the instrument can bring colour to life, tickle our senses, usher colours and weathers. Ronca's double-page spreads bleed to the ends with bright colours and life, depicting scenes of young children reveling in the sound and sharing of music. What a lovely message to put into the hand of any child.
