This book should be in my wheelhouse -- I love noirish novels and have something of a weakness for certain variations on the 'country noir' them. And Hap Collins is very much the type of character I love at the center of my noirish fiction: deeply cynical but with a secret heart of a vaguely precious metal, totally honest with his fear and lack of heroism, loves women but is also emotionally open to close to men, etc, etc, etc. And yet, despite some (a lot of) very skillfully wrought tension, it never really worked for me, and I think that was, ultimately, because of Collins. He's a collection of appealing traits, yes, but they don't hang together as a convincing, compelling character. There were some really wonderful moments, particularly between him and Leonard (who I liked more, but whom I think we know less well), but they just weren't enough. So: glad I read it, but don't need to go further with the series.

The story wasn't bad, but the artwork was often dark and hard to see.

Not sure how exactly to rate this one. Part of the low rating is that I've read a later book of his and know he can be so much better. Plus, with this being the first in a series and I believe his first book ever it suffers from quite a bit of unevenness. The first half felt like he was trying to hard with the Hap and Leonard characters but by the end they seemed to have settled down and he was starting to find his groove. Definitely lots of potential and I will try more in the series. Also interested in checking out the TV series based on his Hap & Leonard books - they might be the sort that work better on screen then in print.

Set in east Texas, the first of the Hap Collins and Leonard Pine novels is everything a good pulp novel should be: short, action packed, and with plenty of greed, blood, and barking dogs.

Lansdale introduces us to Hap and Leonard and immediately sets them at odds to one another by the reappearance of Hap's ex-wife, Trudy. The lady has a scheme and the boys are drawn in, somewhat against their wills. Add in sex, an inept gang of crooks, and a cold Texas winter and you have everything you need for a single-sitting read.

I listened to the Audible version, read by Phil Gigante, and found myself sitting in my driveway, waiting until the next break so I could get out of my car. Even then, I resumed listening the second I could get my headphones on.

Buona lettura

It's a testament to Lansdale's ability that he can show you two or three days in the lives of his characters Hap and Leonard and by the end you'll know exactly who they are from head to toe, by their words and actions. Great stuff. I'll read the others for sure.
