A genuinely delightful romp into the darker corners of Warhammer 40,000's universe.

Considering the Carcharodons only existed in rulebooks prior to this novel, the author has done an incredible job at fleshing them out, whilst still retaining a sense of mystery about the Chapter. The tidbits we do get are enticing and surely spawned plenty of discussion in the community.
The Night Lords are the perfect scary back stabbing bad guys as always. The time taken to give them names and individual motivations is a welcome addition too, beyond “Death to the False Emperor”.
The inclusion of a human protagonist was also a great idea - fully exploring how terrifying even loyal Space Marines appear to wider humanity and definitely someone the reader can empathise with.
The slow burn plot and gradual escalation in the stakes and action set pieces are excellent and fit the Carcharodons’ style.
I really hope the books remain popular and encourage Black Library to commission more!

And the 5th star is only docked, because I don’t think I’ll look back on the story and remember it as one of the greatest stories in 40k.
It was a good story, with excellent writing. Build up and characters these where interesting and enjoyable. If you enjoy a very bloody story this is defiantly for you.

I’ll write a real review eventually. :3

Not my cup of tea, sadly.

A lot of the focus was on space marines fighting, which I didn't find very interesting. Never managed to care that much for neither the Night Lords nor the Carcharodon leader.

I enjoyed the parts written from the perspective of Sub-Warden Rannik and most things outside of firing bolters and revving chainswords were still fairly interesting.
