Okay so there was so much lore to take in from this book. Finding out all about The Rites, and Camilla, Vampire Traditions and other Supernatural creatures and elements.

It is so exciting starting new fantasy books and learning all of this. But sometimes it feels too heavy and it’s harder to take it all in.

But I will say I enjoyed this a lot. I’m excited to see where the story goes from here. To learn more about the magic and Thea.

I wish this series would go on forever but I also want all the answers asap. Signs of good writing

the inconsistencies of character that was present in book 1 only festered and became incredibly problematic in this second book. in comparison to the first book, this sequel also has a lot of editing issues and feels greatly unpolished in comparison. all of the pretty aspects of the writing style disappeared, making the writing here feel very rushed, cheap, and boring.

julian becomes extremely unlikeable in this book. all of thea's characterization (or what little she had) also disappeared. she becomes way more "girl power" in this book, which i do not mean as a compliment, because it is poorly written (and all the other women in this book are written in the same "girl power, can do no wrong" style). in the previous book, it was established that the series likes to switch povs every chapter or so. this trend continued here. while it was done well enough in the first book, in this book, it adds other povs and starts making everything way more complicated than it has to be. it doesn't make as much use of the povs as it did in the first book, since in the first book, it was able to highlight the dynamics and inner thoughts of each character. this book only does it to further plot or simply to be like 'look, we're still switching povs!' and it makes me cringe.

the big reveals of this book also just are sooo poorly timed, like there's one at the very end of the book, and it's like. why are you revealing this now? if you revealed it earlier, there'd be so much fun in reading this book and learning more about the reveal's depth and intricacies, but this didn't happen.

the smut was kind of nice, but i think it lost it's charm in the second book due to the surrounding writing issues, and generally just does not have the same dynamic to make it work as it did in the first book. the first book was able to use the smut in a fun way while still showing how julian was forced to be detached from it, and how much tension was between them because of it. but here, it's just... okay, and doesn't redeem the book or make it likeable.
