this was a bit of a challenge for me, particularly in the beginning. i found the writing in the beginning hard to follow with a lot of run-on sentences and just confusing wording. there was also a lot of very descriptive body horror, gore, and particularly hard to read animal death that made me seriously question if i wanted to continue reading or not - or if i even could bring myself to. ultimately, though, i pushed through and found the story to be a compelling one of revenge, grief, and the tale as old as time: what goes around, comes back around. again and again and again. i don't think this one was totally for me though, but the concept was there.

This was such a challenging book to read, but so worth it! It’s such a unique take on the vengeful spirit horror tale, especially because we get the perspective of the spirit herself and her reasons for going on this rampage against the main characters. I loved the way it ended and it’s crazy to see where the story ended up from where it started. A very gripping story and i couldn’t put it down.

This book was insane. I did NOT know that it was horror going into it, and when I tell you it is HORROR. Granted, I'm not much of a horror reader, so maybe this wouldn't be as terrifying to the normal reader, but I was SO disturbed by the murder scenes. Insanely well-written with a fascinating premise, I felt like I was going crazy along with the characters. The writing is vivid and really paints the horrifying pictures so well. It's a little bit of a slow burn to start, but once the real action starts, I was gripped and couldn't stop listening.

This book is insane. I took a break between the first part and the second because it's a lot to take in all at once. The social commentary on race and generational trauma is impeccable. The final part of the book kept me up all night on the edge of my seat until I finished. Everything about it was great. I'll definitely read more by SGJ.

I was told this book was scary - keeps you awake because the shadows are jumping out at you kind of scary.

I disagree.

It is a spooky story, sure. It’s shocking and gory, and it’s definitely unsettling, but what keeps you up at night isn’t the big bad.

It’s the haunting mechanism of sheer grief and injustice turning the world on its head.

Stomach churning in ways beyond the gore and blood, rather it’s the reflection and justifications that get you.

Phenomenally written, engrossing and haunting.
