I have mixed feelings on this book. Some things I enjoyed was a supernatural creature outside what you typically find in horror or fantasy. The elk creature was both new to me and multilayered in its way of achieving what it wanted. I also enjoyed the more fast-paced parts of the book as it felt like the pieces of the puzzle were finally coming together. The way the culture was incorporated into this novel was also interesting for someone not from America I feel I got to learn allot.

There were also a few things I really struggled with in this novel. The pacing was very slow at times and I found the storytelling choppy. It seems Stephen Graham Jones has intentionally written the novel this way and there is probably literary reasoning for this an English major would understand, however for me I struggled. There were a lot of in-depth talks about topics that did not interest me as well which made it a struggle to get through e.g. motorcycles and basketball.

Lastly for those who struggle to read about animal death please avoid this as there are some very horrific deaths of animals in here.

Overall I am intrigued to read another book by this author as the ideas in this novel were really interesting but if the writing style is similar in all his books I may struggle to be brave enough to pick up another.
