Not a fan. A lot of buildup and nothing original. I found myself waiting for something.. anything to happen and it never really did. I don't understand all of the backstory when it plays barely at all into the plot. Didn't work for me.

DNF. Read as tone-deaf when referencing Native Americans and Indigenous people in a couple of sections, especially when referencing this line: “…whooping as he danced around the weeping bride like a savage…”

The story seemed interesting, but I couldn’t get past the culturally-insensitive material.

I was so excited for this book. I loved the premise and the fact that the story itself starts in a horribly terrifying way.
But there was something forced about the narration, and I found myself struggling to like or care about the main character. I DNF this novel.

Though imperfect in the ways the supernatural elements connect to the character arcs, I overall enjoyed this book. The characters are compelling, sympathetic, and tragic. Scenes of horror are truly creepy. Definitely keeps me wanting to pick up more by Ahlborn.
