This was such a fun story! I liked that this is told as journal entries by Emily. Her thought process while putting the encyclopedia together is so fun and lighthearted. I loved the dry humor and mundane work. Wendell being Emily’s opposite was a nice change. Usually FMC are the bright, happy, bubbly ones and the MMC is grumpy. I liked the swap of dynamics. I don’t think Emily is necessarily grumpy. She’s just very particular and structured. I related a lot to her.

What started as a cosy treat slowly became irritating. Every difficulty the characters find themselves in, they immediately know of the perfect solution. Little development, no thrill, and no real ending?

In the spirit of Howl's Moving Castle and Spinning Silver, I loved the practical, prosaic heroine and magical foppish beau pairing. Very fun.

4.5 stars - rounded up! Cozy and whimsical, if not a tad morbid at times. Definitely a cold weather read as it’s set in Artic Norway in the heart of winter. The journal-style format with footnotes, detailing the creation of an Encyclopedia of Fairies, might not suit everyone, but meeting all the different fairy types, especially little Poe, is delightful. There is an underlying romance in the story as well which was so charming. I adored this! So excited to start the next book, Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands! I NEED more Emily, Wendell, and Shadow asap!!!
