The author clearly only saw maybe the first episode of TNG before writing, and a lot of the characters (particularly Picard and Riker) are very different from how we come to know them. But tbh I admire how the author commits to a characterization & extrapolates based on partial data lol, even if it is jarring at times. And there's a lot of redundant waffling on how characters feel, which is better than the opposite of all action no substance, but concision is a gift. Then there's the ethical dilemma which goes HARD... all in all a mixed bag, but a solidly entertaining read.

I've wanted to delve into the Star Trek TNG book universe for many years now, having been a fan of the series and movies for a longer period. While this was an interesting experience, I feel like the author took creative license a bit too far and made some of these beloved characters do things that are, well, uncharacteristic. Example 1: I don’t believe for one moment that Dr. Crusher and Counsellor Troi would vote to kill people; and example 2: Picard and Riker are not verbally abusive. It's not a problem for a book to be slow-paced, but it's desirable for even the slow-paced moments to have either enjoyable filler, side-stories, or plot-important details instead of insipid specifics. Lastly, I wanted more paranormal than what was provided. The beginning and ending are fitting and bring everything full circle, but it's most of what's in between that brought the rating down for me. 2 stars.

This book lived up to expectations for a book based on a TV series. Big question, what does it mean to be alive? After watching Star Trek: Picard, this was a nice trip back to characters that I like hanging out with.

This felt very much like the first season of the show, rough, which makes sense since it’s one of the early novels. The characters didn’t feel totally developed and I couldn’t get into the ways they were speaking and thinking. It didn’t feel right, like I know them better than themselves in this novel.

For instance, everyone kept saying Mr. Riker. I kept mentally correcting them to Commander Riker. I don’t think I ever heard Mr. Riker from the bridge crew. So, nit-picky? Sure, I probably am being harsh, but honest.

I liked it, but some things were a little off. For example, Troi kept calling Riker "Bill" instead of Will.

Later: I have just watched season 1 episode 2 and Deanna Troi did in fact call Riker "Bill".

I love trashy star trek. This may be the worst I've read.
It feels like bad Fan fic from someone who didn't have a brief on the characters or Star trek generally.

"The engineers gawked at him, frowned, rolled their eyes, squinted—it looked like a cornea convention" is a line i think about all the time. some genuinely interesting characterization and also some very questionable characterization but this isn't about that i just really needed to tell more people about this line

I know this was the first original novel written about the Enterprise D crew so the characters were not fully flushed out, but come on? Riker as an anti-droidit. How can you write a novel about a TV show and not know the show
