5TH GRADE BOOK TALK
“So, tell us, Jesse… how did you spend your summer vacation? Well, Miss Blah-Blah-Blah, it started out pretty boring. I watched a lot of TV and bummed around my dad’s office. Of course, my dad’s office is the time travel division of Cosmos Labs… so that spiced my summer up quite a bit.”
Jesse’s home schooled, so she’s never had to actually write one of those summer vacation essays once the school year starts… but that’s what she’d write if she did. Her dad, super scientist in the time travel division, has been very busy lately on a project called ‘temporal displacement’ – but he doesn’t really talk about it – or anything else – that much. Being home schooled means that Jesse doesn’t have any friends – and doesn’t have much to do. One day, she’s skateboarding around the lab, and gets caught by her dad, who tells her they’ll discuss this later and in the meantime, sit! Like she’s a dog… and because she got in trouble, Jesse ends up being there when some new stage of dad’s mysterious project begins.
Can you guess what happens next? Of course you can – something goes wrong. Suddenly, red lights are flashing everywhere, scientists are yelling things like ‘I CAN’T, THE CONTROL ARE UNRESPONSIVE!’ and ‘TURN IT OFF!’ and ‘SHUT IT DOWN!’ and ‘CUT THE POWER!’ and then there’s a huge explosion and Jesse is thrown across the room as the computer stops saying SEQUENCE INITIATED and finally says SEQUENCE TERMINATED.
Everyone is relieved to all have survived the explosion – and start to pick themselves up and dust off. Then, suddenly, Jess hears something behind her – and she learns very, very quickly what temporal displacement is.
What is temporal displacement, you wonder? Well, it’s when a certain element from one time period is misplaced into another time period. Something traveling in time. And in this particular case? The something is an enormous tyrannosaurus rex.
Is Jess about to be eaten before this comic even gets to two dozen pages long? Are the scientists going to blow the dinosaur up and try their experiments again? When you mix superscienec and dinosaurs, you just know that the result is going to be awesome. Check out Terrible Lizard, a graphic novel about a girl and her… well, a girl and her dinosaur.

Cute book about a girl and her mister fighting T-Rex! This was a short five chapter story of a Dino that has been temporal displaced to our time by military experiments. Jesse, the scientist daughter, bonds with the T-Rex. But the same distortion that brought the Dino brings other monsters.

This doesn't have a string plot other than monster fights and a trigger happy general that wants to put the Dino down. I really liked it though. I like the idea of a ferocious t-Rex imprinting on a teen and the two becoming friends. Nice art through out.
