4/5 ⭐️s. In looking around, reviews are all over the place on this one. The writing was difficult to comprehend at times because of (I believe) the stream of consciousness POV shifts between Rochester and Antoinette, but I loved the challenge. I got lost inside Antoinette's mind and truly felt for her and her impossible situation. I now understand Rochester better, but that doesn't mean I like Mr. Byronic Badman anymore than I did in JANE EYRE. The descriptions of the landscape in Jamaica/Dominica were gorgeously lush; one could see why Antoinette's heart belonged there. A post-colonial look at Britain's and France's imposed domination over these islands was heartbreaking to read, but I learned so much history about this period that I didn't know before.

Only read it so that i didnt feel bad for not revising english lit. Honestly was a bit confused abt at first but i get it. You do see her fall in to madness. Its an interesting interpretation for sure

The start & end were good, if not fully descriptive & expanded (should not need pages of background and history longer than the book itself because it’s not explained in the text) the middle was frustrating, Rochester’s POV didn’t add anything that we could not under stand from Antoinette. I did not find it enjoyable or that it worked on its own merits.

I expected more from this book and was left quite disappointed. I expected it would be solely from Antoinette's point of view, but to my surprise, much of the book was dedicated to Rochester's, too much in my opinion. And the little we did hear from Antoinette was more about her background than who she is. We got a lot of context but not a three dimensional character which I thought to be the aim of this book. It unfortunately did not do much justice to Antoinette, who remains still just a Madwoman in the Attic, but with a backstory.

This was a disappointment. I was very interested in the premise, but I don't feel like the book added much to the Jane Eyre story. It was also quite difficult to read.

This book was fascinating. And so very sad. And unfortunately, I now see Mr. Rochester in a new, and unflattering light.
