After Palace Circle, I actually found The Golden Prince pretty disappointing.

In the interest of full disclosure, I got a free copy of this book through the Goodreads First Look program.

This book is amazingly well-written. There are many delicate historical details about the royal family, coronations, history, etc. that are woven into the story without being overpowering. I was very interested in all of the characters and the story, though fictional, was historically compelling. The ending resolves the complications well, but leaves you wanting a little bit more- perhaps a coda of actual historical info, though that would be readily available everywhere.

The only two off-notes are that some of the sentences are unnecessarily complicated. Occasionally, Dean uses a few too many clauses, rather than short declarative sentences, which I had to read out loud several times in order to understand. In addition, the large cast of characters leads to plot are sometimes jarring.

Nevertheless, I read this book in a span of a couple days because I wanted to know what was going to happen. The story seemed to roll out in front of me in that "just one more chapter" way that leads you to read 100 more pages when you meant to go to sleep.

I'd highly recommend this book to Anglophiles, historical romance readers and people who enjoy well-researched historical fiction of any genre.

DNF'd at 250 pages. This really wasn't the book for me - I realised I wouldn't like it fairly early on, but it was still enjoyable in a 'so bad it's good kind of way'. Then it just became horrifically dull. Also remembered just after reading it that Edward VIII was a Nazi sympathiser, and nope, I cannot make myself care about someone like that. Maybe if it had just focused on Rose being a suffragette, then I would have been more interested. But the characters were shallow, the romance was insipid, and the reader incredibly bored.

I thought this book was alright. I think that the idea was really interesting but I think that the author could have written better. I thought that some of the sentences were structured weird and found myself rereading sentences on multiple occasions in order to understand their meaning. The story was also told from many different view points including minor characters. I can't decide about how I feel about this. Overall it was just an alright book in my opinion.
