Third in the Play-by-Play sports romance series revolving around the Riley family. The couple focus is on Jenna Riley and Ty Anderson.

My Take
Oh, this was so sweet. And, all I can say is...thank god for Ty in Jenna's life! It's a damn good thing he loves her after the fear she expresses!

Burton had a nice bit of tension on with lots of family support. And Ty, oh that Ty! Jenna is so determined not to date an athlete or anyone involved in sports...so Ty helps her out. He keeps sending potential dates her way, planning that they won't be as exciting or arousing as himself. Then when he discovers her big secret...ohhh, to have that kind of support is so amazing.

I can't believe that Ty had the patience to wait Jenna out. And he was so unbelievably sweet in wanting her to pursue her musical dreams! Beautiful.

The sex was sort of stuck on. It's hard to have a romance these days without it and the really big scene seemed more manufactured than real. Even the appreciation Ty had for Jenna's uninhibited enjoyment wasn't as important as his pursuit.

Their visit with Ty's parents was definitely insightful. I loved how Jenna got into his mother's interests and encouraged her. I especially loved how she got Ty to see his mother's point of view.

The Story
Jenna Riley refuses to date any guy in sports so naturally she ends up with Tyler Anderson. Who, in his turn, forces Jenna to face up to her musical dreams .

Tyler Anderson just won't take 'no' for an answer — hey, ya gotta be assertive if you're gonna be an winner in any arena. He and his St. Louis Ice hockey buddies have made Riley's their home away from home and while Jenna doesn't mind the increased profit it means, she does not like his increased pressure on her. She does not need his help behind the bar. She does not need him to walk her to her car. She certainly doesn't need those mind-melting kisses of his!

But the whole family is not about to help her out. Oh, no...besides inviting him home for Sunday dinner, Tara has the nerve to invite him to their wedding!

As for Ty. He can't resist the challenge that Jenna presents and he goes after her with everything he's got. Only, it turns into a whole lot more than he expected.

The Characters
Jenna Riley is the little sister of a sports-crazed family. Hey, when your brothers are both major, national players… Since their dad's heart attack, Jenna has been in charge at Riley's, the sports bar the family runs in St. Louis. It's too much sports and Jenna has no intention of falling for another man who is into sports.

Tyler Anderson is a gentleman, compassionate in his personal life and damned aggressive in his professional life. The kind of guy most of us ladies dream of. He's perfect for Jenna since he wants nothing to do with love. Or marriage. He's seen what it does to people. Victor and Eddie Wolkowski are his buddies on and off the ice. Louise is his mother who finally seems to have moved on from the divorce; Sean and Gloria are his father and stepmother. And not what you're expecting.

Elizabeth is Ty's sports agent and she is engaged to Gavin Riley (Changing the Game). Mick Riley is getting married to Tara and about to adopt Nathan as his own (Perfect Play). Jimmy and Kathleen Riley are their parents.

The Cover and Title
The cover should have had somebody check out "Ty's" naked torso---it looks like those lovely muscles are crackling into ancient bits. Don't look closely or it spoils the intent of a hot guy in low-slung, unbuttoned jeans with roughly used skates slung over his shoulder, twisting to look back at something or someone.

It's true enough, both Ty and Jenna are Taking a Shot at love.

Best one of the series, so far but I really wish
they hadn't gotten engaged at the end. The fact that it always ends with the 2 main characters getting engaged is kinda ruining the fun of the ending.

Definitely the best storyline so far. Both Jenna and Ty were actually fun to read about plus they actually had interesting sexual scenes which was fun.

This is Hockey Romance before Elle Kennedy and Emily Rath. This is a solid romance books but there was so cringy parts in the book.

Overall over I did like the characters but Jenna did grate on my nerves a little bit. The whole book she goes on and on about how she doesn’t date athletes but their good enough to sleep with.

Taking A Shot is the third book in the Play by Play series by author Jaci Burton. The main characters for this book are Jenna Riley and Ty Anderson.

Read one page then close the book. Swoon over the cover and imagine licking every drop off that cover models chest. Repeat. Yep that is about how it went while I read this book. Then I realized that if I ever wanted to enjoy the story I would have to actually read instead of drooling.

Jenna Riley is the youngest Riley child. She is sister to the previous books characters, Mick and Gavin. She is busy running the family owned sports bar after their father had a major heart attack. While she enjoys her job at times, running a sports bar was never her dream. After being surrounded by sports all of her life, the last thing she wants is to date anyone who is a sports fan.

Enter Ty Anderson. We got to meet Ty in the second book in the series and I was glad to see him featured in Taking A Shot. He is a pro hockey player and is attracted to Jenna. He finds her piercings, tattoos and attitude sexy and wants to get know her better. Unfortunately, since he is a pro hockey player, he gets shot down before he can even melt the ice around her heart.

I have to say that this was my least favorite book in the series even though I was anxious about Ty's story. I loved Ty and everything about him. I think the main problem I had with this book was Jenna. I wasn't a fan of her. What man isn't going to at least like one sport? I am sure they are out there, but I have never met one single guy who hasn't at least enjoyed on sort of sport -- even if it is just one game a year. I also didn't like how she kept thinking she had to put her dreams on hold and run the Sports Bar. She had good management in place and the means to open up a separate business of a music bar. The hold up was thinking she had to give up everything just to do this. I also didn't like her being so back and forth with her feelings for Ty.

I will say this though--
Sex.
On ice.
Standing up.
On ice skates!

Whew! I wasn't sure if the ice was going to break beneath them because that scene was HOT. I still enjoyed the book as a whole, but I wish the main character of Jenna could have been better. Ty deserved more than what Jenna gave him.

Just so everyone knows this is the third book in the Jaci Burton Play by Play series just in case you didn't read my whole title. I always hate starting in the middle of a series even if they are stand alone books(btw this is a stand alone) The second book in this series was definitely my favorite. There was a lot of lead up to this book in the second one Changing the Game.

The main female character Jenna has two super star sports brothers and refuses to fall in love with any man connected in anyway to sports, including watching them. After her father's heart attack last year she has taken over running the families sports bar. There are sports on every TV and she speaks sports all day with all the customers. She just wants a break, any break would be nice. Except for the only guy that seems to be paying any attention to her is Ty from the Ice hockey team. While he's super hot and nice she doesn't want to date anyone near sports at all.

Ty isn't backing away from a challenge.. which happens to be Jenna. He thinks they just need to get it out of their system and move on with their lives. Except once she lets him in he doesn't want out. Of course she can't get out fast enough. She has a secret of course (nothing that dramatic) that he finds out and pushes her towards her dreams. Well lets just say she is stubborn very stubborn.

I really enjoyed how the characters interacted in this story and how all the previous characters were back. I felt Jenna's stubbornness may have been taken to the extremes, but of course she was raised with tough macho mean around. The only way she could get anything was by being stubborn. So maybe it fits her.

Ty of course was super alpha I mean hello he is a hockey player. There really wasn't many soft moments of Ty in this book. Nothing really stood out to me about him which is sad.

As per usual Jaci Burton style there were tons of steamy scenes they may have overrun this book and that's why I couldn't get to emotionally invested. I will warn any of you that the steamy scenes are just that steamy and sometimes borderline erotica. Some I skimmed some I read...

Jaci Burton is a great author with well written novels. I highly recommend her. This one just wasn't my favorite in the series, which doesn't say anything for the novel itself.
